mashing up libraries since 2008

I don't want to get too hung up about structure, since the point of the day is just to get some interested people together and do some interesting things - the informality is kind of the point.

However, to give some direction to the day, and to try to be inclusive of a wide range of people with different skills, I'm working towards a notional structure as follows:

10am Start
10-11 Dummies guide to ... (some short presentations on some of the
tech/tools that might be of use during the day - post requests/suggestions below)
11-4 Mashup - work in teams or individually to do interesting stuff
4-5 Round up of mashups and close

I had initially thought that we could have a 'pitch' session where people pitched ideas for development, but in order to save time on the day, I suggest that any suggestions for projects for the day are discussed in these forums beforehand - I'll kick off with some suggestions - please add more.

20 slides, one shown every 20 seconds... I like the focus on brevity :)

How about a 6 minute presentation limit and 4 minute 'space' for discussion? i.e. the 6 minutes is simply the length of time that people watching agree not to ask questions unless invited :)

Hi Owen

For mashed museum we had an almost total lack of structure, which was good in some ways but could have been better in others...almost everyone said "I'd have liked to collaborate more" - but it's quite hard to do this and at the same time have freedom...

Second bit of learning was taken from last year, which was that back then we didn't have any / much data. This year, Dan Z and I exposed our hoard.it scraped data set of 45,000 museum object records. This was widely used and I think appreciated. Give me a shout via email if you want me and Dan to scrape and present some library data that isn't available via API....!

Third, make any data visible well in advance of the event so that people can become familiar with it, or start munging it. Data cleaning is ALWAYS the bit that takes a huge chunk out of the day and really bites people's arses...

I'll post more up at www.mashedmuseum.org.uk as I think of it...

Mike

Thanks for this. I think Libraries are in a better position than Museums with the availability of data. I'm hoping that Talis can provide some of their bib data for the day, and also there are SRU interfaces to COPAC etc.

We are building a list of APIs and data sources on another forum. I'll do a summary page with all the information as we approach the event

However - if anyone else can suggest some stuff it would be nice to get hold of for the day, please post it here, or in the other forums, and we can see what can be put together with Mike, Dan and whoever else wants to scavenge data (just a thought - any interesting special collections or rare books stuff that we could get?)

How about tutorials on specific pieces of technology to kick-off? Thinking that we could have 'intro to solr', 'intro to the Talis Platform', 'intro to SRU/SRW' etc. to kick-off - let's say 30 mins at the start of the day with sessions running twice in parallel?

Is this a good idea? Any volunteers to run tutorials?

So far I've got volunteers for tutorials on:

Talis Platform
SRU/SRW
Web Interface design

Any votes? Any more offers? Any suggestions - post them here - otherwise you'll get what you're given ;)
