mashed library

mashing up libraries since 2008

Dave Pattern

data sources, web services, apis, etc for use at mashlib09

As part of the 2008 event, a big list of useful sites and services was collated:
- Useful URLs
- Services/APIs/Systems/Technology/Data that we could use

What new sources of "stuff" have appeared since the Birkbeck event that we can use? Please post your thoughts either here or in the old theads!

That reminds me -- I'm planning to put together some web service/APIs for that data and I'll make sure I do it before the event!

The usage & suggestion data now has a web service front end :-)

For journal RSS feeds, tictoc has been doing work to create an api. As a stop gap they have created this
http://www.tictocs.ac.uk/text.php

Also, http://jopml.org/ is a rails app which uses the data above to allow a user to search for journal titles matching a term, and create a opml file based on the seatch results. Dunno if it could be of use.

Some of these might be irrelevant as they are more cultural-heritage, but check out http://mashedmuseum.pbworks.com/Mashup+directory - particularly my pet project http://hoard.it. Also I did a quick HE lookup thingy for last years' IWMW - see links from http://www.studentviews.net

...by the way, if you want sources scraped and added to http://hoard.it then let me know and I'll see if Dan Z has got time to do it...

How about the Yahoo! User Interface Library (YUI)? I've recently been trying to create a carousel, with a view to showing book covers (e.g. most popular, new additions) but have so far been unsuccesful :o(

I've implemented spelling suggestions into our OPAC via the Yahoo! spelling suggestion service which may be useful to other folk.

And my most obvious one is the Google books API

Wasn't sure where to put this, so decided to post it here. Karen Coombs (LibraryWebChic) did a Mashup Workshop at ELAG 09. You can see here reflections on the event at http://www.librarywebchic.net/wordpress/2009/04/24/elag-library-mas....

There is also a page that lists some of the mashups mentioned in the workshop at http://sites.google.com/site/elag09mashupworkshop/ - this includes one I particularly liked which enhances CD information in a catalogue with information from Last.fm
